Message From Chubb's Board of Directors
Lawrence M. Small, Chubb Director since 1989
Mr. Small is the former Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, the world's largest museum and research complex.
"A diverse and inclusive workforce leads to the generation of new ideas and products, enhanced productivity and improved engagement.
People's varied experiences contribute to the way in which they approach challenges and propose solutions. Diversity requires
an organization's leadership to recognize that its workforce brings different perspectives and approaches to doing business.
It must actively seek ideas from its workforce and value and nurture those ideas in order to remain a competitive employer,
partner and investment of choice.
Karen Hastie Williams, Chubb Director since 2000
Ms. Williams is the chairperson of the Business Opportunities for Leadership Diversity (BOLD) Initiative board. She is also
a trustee for the Black Student Fund and the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund.
"Do not believe that prejudice has vanished from corporate America. That is simply not true. The difference at Chubb is
that the succession planning process is based on the premise that there are very competent, well-trained and well-educated
women and individuals of color who can and will help the company to be responsive to its shareholders, its customers and its
employees. The demographics of the 21st century are here and now. The challenge for us is how to take advantage of this information and put it to work in support
of all our employees. Being the first is not important for its own sake; rather, it is important if you can use that position
to open the door for others. The Chubb Board is committed to opening doors of opportunity for diverse individuals in all
facets of its business and to incorporating a workplace flexibility initiative as an effective tool for increased productivity."
